THOMAS HUDSON (1701-79)

George Frederick Handel (1685-1759)

1756

RCIN 400960

This is a preliminary sketch for Hudson’s famous portrait of the ageing, nearly blind composer. Though the sketch represents a near definitive state of the composition there were several subsequent changes. For example the blank score open on the table became Messiah, the most famous work upon which Jennens and Handel collaborated. First recorded in the Royal Collection during the reign of Queen Victoria Cat. 253
