PETER SCHEEMAKERS (1691-1781)

Frederick, Prince of Wales

1741

RCIN 31169

Frederick, Prince of Wales was an important patron of Peter Scheemakers. However, this bust was commissioned not by him, but by the prominent Whig peer Richard Temple, Viscount Cobham for his Temple of Friendship at Stowe. Strikingly neoclassical in style, the portrait shows Frederick in draped Roman armour, prominently displaying his Garter badge, and most noticeably stripped of his wig. Commissioned by Richard Temple, Viscount Cobham; bought by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Cat. 7
