WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764)

Dr Misaubin and Dr Ward

c.1730

RCIN 913472

This rapid sketch is probably an imagined interaction between two infamous quack doctors, John Misaubin (left) and Joshua Ward (right). Hogarth showed the two men disputing over the treatment of the dying heroine in A Harlot’s Progress. The identifying inscriptions are an early hand, but were not written by Hogarth himself. Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1845 Cat. 83
