This complex object was assembled by the enterprising clockmaker Charles Clay. The focal point is an engraved rock-crystal casket signed and dated by the Augsburg maker ‘Melchior Baumgartner … 1664’. This is raised on an ebony base containing a clock, situated upon a mahogany and ebony panelled pedestal enclosing a weight-driven barrel organ playing ten tunes, eight of which were specially arranged by the composer George Frideric Handel. Acquired by either Frederick, Prince of Wales, c. 1743-50, or by Augusta, Princess of Wales, 1759 Cat. 120
