ISAAC OLIVER (C. 1565-1617)

A Young Man Seated Under a Tree

c.1590-1595

RCIN 420639

This is the first of five important Tudor and Stuart miniatures acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales. As one of a limited number of surviving full-length sixteenth-century cabinet miniatures, it is one of the most significant Hanoverian acquisitions. At the time of purchase the miniature was believed to represent Sir Philip Sidney (1554 – 86) and it was probably this romantic historic association that attracted the Prince of Wales. Bought by Frederick, Prince of Wales, between 1745 and 1751 Cat. 221
