GEORGE STUBBS (1724-1806)

William Anderson with two Saddle-Horses

Signed and dated 1793

RCIN 400106

A well-stocked mews provided its owner with a ‘string’ of horses, like a relay race. A fresh horse is here brought along by the Prince of Wales’s Head Groom, ready for when the Prince’s current mount tires. We must imagine the Prince himself to be riding in front, just outside Stubbs’s field of vision.
