This is a close copy of Pontormo’s painting (Accademia, Florence) made from a full-scale design by Michelangelo (now lost) which he drew in 1532. Pontormo’s painting was to be displayed in a room celebrating the love poetry of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. This allegory shows Venus kissing Cupid while disarming him with her right hand.
