The drawing is executed in Cigoli’s distinctive technique of broad brush and ink on dark prepared paper. It is a study for an altarpiece of the Emperor Heraclitus carrying the True Cross into Jerusalem, painted for the silk-weavers’ guild for their chapel in San Marco, Florence. One of the servants carries the emperor’s peaked hat on a platter. No. 29
