FEDERICO BAROCCI (URBINO C. 1535-URBINO 1612)

The Calling of St Andrew

c.1580

RCIN 906830

This is Barocci’s model for his altarpiece of the Calling of St Andrew, painted for the oratory of the fishermen’s guild in Pesaro, looted by Napoleon’s troops and now in Brussels. St Andrew kneels before Christ, while St Peter clambers out of the boat in the background. The drawing seems to have been framed and displayed unglazed for many years, and is thus in poor condition.
