The Annunciation of the Conception of the Baptist

In the early 1550s Tibaldi designed and decorated the Poggi chapel in San Giacomo Maggiore, Bologna. This is a study for the fresco on the right wall. The Gospel of St Luke relates that the angel Gabriel appeared to the priest Zacharias, telling him that his elderly wife Elizabeth would bear him a son. Here however the angel swoops down into the temple to announce the news to Elizabeth herself. No. 46
