ANTONIO ALLEGRI CORREGGIO (1489?-1534)

Saint Catherine Reading

c.1530-32

RCIN 405768

St Catherine of Alexandria was desired by the Emperor Maxentius (AD 306-12), and martyred when she refused either to marry him or renounce her Christian faith. In this late work by Correggio, she is shown holding a martyr’s palm and resting her book on a fragment of the wheel which shattered miraculously during her ordeal.
