PIETRO TACCA (1577-1640)

Prancing horse

1600

RCIN 35467

Bronzes of this model, which reproduces the pose of Giambologna’s equestrian monument to Grand Duke Cosimo I de’Medici in Florence (1599), were made in large numbers, and one was presented to Henry, Prince of Wales in 1611. In this example the golden lacquered surface was subsequently replaced with a dark and even finish which lends it a deceptively modern appearance. First recorded in 1807
