The panel binding bears the arms of Cardinal Alvise Sagredo, Patriarch of Venice from 1678 to 1688. The collection of old master drawings formed by Alvise’s nephew Zaccaria Sagredo was sold c.1751 to Joseph Smith, the British Consul in Venice. Smith’s entire collection was bought by George III in 1762.
