AFTER GIOVANNI LORENZO BERNINI (1598-1680)

David

1675

RCIN 35459

This is a copy of the famous life-size marble statue of David preparing to unleash the sling-shot that would fell Goliath, carved by Bernini in 1623-4 for Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Bernini’s emphasis on tension and latent power distinguishes this from earlier depictions of the Biblical hero, notably Michelangelo’s colossal statue. Probably acquired by George IV
