Gem encrusted daggers with animal-headed hilts were popular within the Mughal court in the late seventeenth century, and were presented to favoured individuals and worn as an emblem of status. A circular hook at the end of the gold and ruby mounted beak of the parrot suggests that an ornament was once suspended from it.
