Pocket watch and watch chains

Pocket watches of this type with enamelled portraits were popular among Indian rulers in the late nineteenth century. This double half hunter watch, manufactured by H. Grandjean and Co., is decorated with an enamelled portrait of the Maharaja of Patiala wearing the Order of the Star of India, which he received in 1870 from Queen Victoria, and may originally have been one of the Maharaja’s personal watches.
