INDIAN

Casket

RCIN 11313

The depictions of Hindu deities are carried out via decoration known as swami (god) work. This was usually seen on export metalwork produced by craftsmen based in Madurai. The corners of the casket show yalis, elephant headed lions, which are also depicted in South Indian temples where they were carved in the round to function as pillars.
