RCIN 640613
The East India Company nearly collapsed in 1773 after a severe famine swept Bengal. Warren Hastings was appointed the first Governor-General to oversee the Company’s reform. He later returned to Britain charged with ‘high crimes and misdemeanours’ and faced an impeachment trial which lasted seven years. He was acquitted in 1795.
