Parashurama, on the right with his axe,was the sixth avatar of Vishnu. He is slaying the thousand-armed warrior king Kartavirya, seen on the left with many of his arms already chopped off and lying on the ground. In a temple courtyard in the right background are the body of Parashuma's father, Jamadagni (whose death he is avenging), and his mother Renuka. Flying on the left is Jamadagni's stolen wish-granting cow who has escaped to the sky.
