Pelican, early 18th century.

Another version of the same subject as the previous painting on f.25v. A white pelican perched on a grassy mound against a hillside stands with its beak open in which a bird is drinking. Others sit upon his beak, fly around or are perched on branches.


verso:

Virgin and Child, after Durer, early 17th century.

A copy of an engraving by Durer, 'Madonna by the Tree'. Mary sits on a rustic seat with wooden rails beside a tree trunk and a small river, the Christ Child in her arms. She wears a pink dress edged with a fur collar and cuffs under a vibrant blue cloak, which is partly outlined with fine gold lines, and an orange cap. Both mother and child have finely drawn haloes.
