Abdul Karim (left) was one of several Indian servants in Queen Victoria’s household. Their ‘Indian-style’ uniform was embroidered with the Queen’s monogram ‘VRI’. The letter ‘I’ (for Imperatrix) was added after she assumed the title of Empress of India on 1 May 1876.
