By the early nineteenth century, the power and authority of the Mughal emperor had reduced significantly. This painting may have been commissioned by the British Resident in Delhi to commemorate Mirza Abu Zafar (second left) being confirmed as heir apparent over the emperor’s preferred son, Mirza Jahangir, who is noticeably absent from the scene. It was first recorded in the Royal Collection in 1819.
