RY 'Fairy' steaming through the Fleet [Spithead]

11 Mar 1854

RCIN 2906008

Britain declared war against Russia on 27 March 1854 but prior to this, a number of preparations had been made for the anticipated conflict. The British naval fleet, under the command of Sir Charles Napier, departed from Spithead on 11 March with Queen Victoria and the royal family watching from on board the Royal Yacht. Fenton made a sequence of eight photographs recording the event.
