ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Nubian servants with horses

27 Apr 1855

RCIN 2500416

These servants were from a region of North Africa called Nubia, which at the time of the Crimean War was part of the Ottoman Empire. Nubian servants appear in a number of Fenton’s photographs, perhaps chosen because they would have seemed exotic to a Victorian audience.

From the collection of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII
