ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Lieut. Genl. His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, KG

1856

RCIN 604992

Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, was a cousin of Queen Victoria who served as a commander during the Crimean War. He was present at the Battle of the Alma and the Battle of Inkerman, for which he was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the Order of the Bath. He was invalided out of the Crimea in December 1854, thus missing Fenton who arrived in Balaklava in March 1855. It is likely that this portrait was taken in London when Fenton returned from the Crimea.
