ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Captain Brown, 4th Light Dragoons, and servant in Winter Dress

1855

RCIN 2500537

Captain Brown served with the 4th (Queen’s Own) Light Dragoons and was wounded during the Charge of the Light Brigade and at the Battle of Inkerman. Fenton took several photographs of soldiers wearing winter dress. It is unclear whether this was a response to widespread press reports that the British troops were ill-equipped for the harsh Crimean winters, or simply to complement his other photographs of different uniforms worn by the allied troops.

From the collection of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII
