Balaklava from above the Russian Church

Mar 1855

RCIN 2500487

This view includes a prominently positioned Russian Orthodox church, in mid-construction when the British captured the town. The onion-shaped dome is instantly recognisable as a Russian architectural feature, making this photograph one of the very few that makes direct reference to the enemy. It is a reminder that the allies are the invaders in this foreign landscape.

From the collection of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII
