David Allan, from Alloa, trained at the Foulis Academy in Glasgow before settling in Rome for ten years. This drawing is one of a group of ten illustrating scenes from the Carnival in Rome, when Romans celebrated before Lent, dressed in costumes and masks. The drawing shows Allan's skill at portraying a variety of social classes and facial features in a lively manner. Acquired by George IV when Prince Regent
