This is one of ten drawings by Allan of the Carnival in Rome and, as in the others in the group, the architecture is reversed, suggesting that Allan executed them as designs for engravings. The English artist Paul Sandby, purchased the drawings from Allan and published four as aquatints. Allan eventually settled in Edinburgh in 1779 and was appointed Master of the Trustees' Academy.
