SIR DAVID WILKIE (1785-1841)

The Spanish Posada

dated 1827

RCIN 922931

Wilkie originally developed this composition to depict an incident in the life of Christopher Columbus. However by October 1827 he had turned the subject into a meeting of guerillas in a mountain inn. In the finished painting on display in the first room, the figures are reduced in scale and set further back in the picture space in order to achieve a greater sense of depth. Purchased by HM The Queen, 1980
