David Allan trained at the Foulis Academy in Glasgow before settling in Rome for ten years. This drawing is one of a group of ten illustrating scenes from the Carnival in Rome (a Roman celebration before Lent, where participants dressed in costumes and masks). The drawing shows Allan’s skill at portraying a variety of social classes and facial features in a lively manner. Acquired by George IV when Prince Regent, 1812
