WILLIAM DYCE (1806-64)

The Madonna and Child

Signed and dated 1845

RCIN 403745

Dyce, who was from Aberdeen, travelled extensively in Italy and was interested in early Italian Renaissance art. This painting is reminiscent of the type of Madonna and Child compositions painted by Raphael, and it was so admired by Queen Victoria that she made a pastel copy of the upper half of the painting. Purchased by Prince Albert, 1845
