Prince George Augustus of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1748-85)

1768-70

RCIN 406963

Allan Ramsay painted a number of family portraits for George III and Queen Charlotte. Prince George Augustus, the younger brother of Queen Charlotte, came to London in 1768 and it was probably during this time that Ramsay painted his portrait. He is shown wearing the uniform of an officer of the Cuirassiers of the 4th Regiment of Austrian-Salzburg Dragoons, or ‘Serbellonis’. Probably painted for Queen Charlotte
