      dated 1862

      RCIN 919573

The landscape painter Waller Hugh Paton, the younger brother of Sir Joseph Noël Paton, specialised in atmospheric views of Scotland. In this meticulous watercolour of Edinburgh at sunset, Paton has used touches of bodycolour to build up a highly detailed finish, particularly in the foreground. Queen Victoria commissioned this image as it was the view she used to see on her approach to Holyroodhouse. Commissioned by Queen Victoria
