JAMES GILES (1801-70)

A View of Lochnagar

Signed and dated 1848

RCIN 405006

Queen Victoria commissioned the Aberdeen landscape artist James Giles to paint two views of the Balmoral estate, including this one of the mountain of Lochnagar, as Christmas presents for Prince Albert. The Queen and the Prince had ascended Lochnagar in September 1848 and Giles’s painting captures the grandeur of the landscape and the silvery light on the hills. Given by Queen Victoria to Prince Albert, Christmas 1848
