Moonlight lesson: three stage drawing demonstration

Leitch was the drawing master for Queen Victoria and her children from 1846 until his retirement in 1865. These drawings and detailed instructions demonstrate how to paint a ruined abbey in moonlight, and were intended as a lesson for the Queen. The first sketch consists of three tones of colour wash, the second sketch has shadows added, using ‘French blue burnt umber & the slightest tinge of purple lake’, and the third sketch shows the addition of further colour and tones.
