Princess Victoria and Princess Alice, 1848

In early 1848 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's four eldest children had their portraits drawn by Dyce, who was particularly favoured by the royal couple. Princess Victoria, the first born, is depicted here age seven. On 3 February, the Queen recorded in her journal that she had received ‘the portraits of the Children, framed, & they really are beautiful, even though not very individual likenesses.’ Purchased by Queen Victoria from Colnaghi, 18 May 1865
