DEMIDOFF LAPIDARY FACTORY, ST PETERSBURG

Vase and pedestal

c.1850

RCIN 1709

This vase was made at the private stone-carving factory owned by the noble Demidov family, who benefitted from their own exclusive source of malachite in the Ural Mountains. The design, with gilt-bronze foliage and flowers around the vase and the pedestal, is in the fashionable neo-rococo style. The vase was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.
