Tsesarevich Alexei's (1904-1918) colonel's uniform of a Kuban Cossack Attaman

c.1910

RCIN 120486

From 1827 the Russian heir to the throne became the Ataman (supreme military leader) of all the Cossack troops. The uniform bears labels that show it was kept in Alexei’s rooms at the Alexander Palace, Tsarskoe Selo. Lady Muriel Paget described it as ‘a very sad possession and everyone including myself has felt great emotions about it’.

Purchased by Lady Muriel Paget in a government shop, Leningrad, 1935; given as a gift to King George V
