After the death of her husband in 1905, Grand Duchess Elizabeth, sister of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna and granddaughter of Queen Victoria, founded a convent in Moscow dedicated to Sts Martha and Mary, and commissioned leading contemporary artists to design and decorate its buildings.
