This elegant portrait of Queen Victoria’s favourite granddaughter was painted when the sitter and her husband, Nicholas II, stayed at Balmoral during the autumn of 1896. In a letter to her daughter, Empress Frederick, the Queen noted that there had not been time to paint the Emperor.
