FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

Juliane, Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfield, Grand Duchess Anna Feodorovna of Russia (1781-1860)

Signed and dated 1848

RCIN 404524

Described by Queen Victoria as ‘an indescribably like and beautiful picture of Aunt Julia’, the artist captures a wistfulness and sorrow in the sitter’s expression. Her marriage in 1796 to Grand Duke Constantine had failed by 1813 and she later lived in exile in Boissière, near Geneva, which appears in the background.
