In 1892 Emperor Alexander III invited Karl Lisberg from the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory to St Petersburg to teach the underglaze painting method to Russian artists. As a result, vases of this type with muted colours and traditional Russian scenes were produced until the outbreak of the First World War.
