The Virgin with Martha and Mary

Following the death of her husband, Grand Duchess Elizabeth founded a convent in Moscow dedicated to Sts Martha and Mary, and commissioned leading contemporary artists to design and decorate its buildings. The icon painter Vasily Gurianov worked for members of the imperial family in the years before the Revolution.
