FABERGÉ

Mosaic Egg and Surprise

1914

RCIN 9022

Fabergé’s female designer Alma Phil (1888–1976) was inspired by needlepoint, which can be seen in the design of this Egg. It is regarded as one of the most technically accomplished and most expensive ever made. The surprise bears an enamelled profile group portrait of the five children of the imperial couple.

Commissioned by Nicholas II for Alexandra Feodorovna, Easter 1914; purchased by King George V and Queen Mary from Cameo Corner, London, 1933
