NICHOLAS CHEVALIER (1828-1902)

The Marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, 23 January 1874

1874-75

RCIN 404476

Chevalier minutely observes the architecture of the interior of the Cathedral of the Winter Palace. Details such as the snow settling on the window and the ornate vestments of the clergy add richness to the scene. The bridal couple are bathed in winter light and the Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria’s representative, is conspicuous in his scarlet tunic.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria.
