The wedding took place just weeks after the death of Alexander III (the bridegroom’s father), in the cathedral of the Winter Palace. The artist described how he was ‘intoxicated by the beauty of the scene … the richness of the colours, the light and the golden fabrics’ and he has conveyed the atmosphere and intimacy in what was a grand ceremonial occasion. Commissioned by Queen Victoria.
