RCIN 8033

Falconet’s monument to Peter I, commissioned by Catherine II, was completed in 1782. It stands on the bank of the River Neva, and commemorates the founder of St Petersburg. It is often known as ‘The Bronze Horseman’ after the poem of 1833 by Alexander Pushkin, which it inspired.

Probably acquired by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.
