RUSSIAN

Specimen Box

1950-56

RCIN 100869

After the Revolution, the level of expertise in the production of one of Russia’s most important forms of decorative art – carved hardstones – declined, due to the loss of highly specialised craftsmen. This box, produced as a diplomatic gift in the Soviet era is a rare exception.

Presented to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother by Nikolai Bulganin and Nikita Khrushchev, 1956
