WatersJames Gardiner fought in the Hanoverian army during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. His life and gallant death were interpreted as a classic tale of a rogue made good, and Walter Scott included Gardiner in his novel Waverley (1814). This biography was presented to Alexander I by Edmund Hepple during the Emperor’s visit to London in 1814.

First recorded in the Royal Collection in the reign of Queen Victoria.
